The sulfur bridged annulene diones fused with benzene and furan were synthesized, and their ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectra in strong acid media indicated formation of dicationic species in which the positive charges localized on the carbonyl carbons, mainly due to the unfavorable p-orbital overlap.
