The dynamical behaviour of HCl in the cage of β-hydroquinone clathrate was investigated by neutron scattering with particular reference to the phase transition at 12.3 K. A quantum precessional transition of HCl was observed at 4.3 meV as a broad peak, below the phase transition temperature for the stoichiometric compound. The peak width became much broader for the non-stoichiometric clathrate in which a fraction of cages are unoccupied. The peak disappeared for the deuterated compound. Quasielastic scattering appeared above the phase transition temperature (12.3 K).
