N2 - We report the interactions of slow highly charged Bismuth ions (Biq+, q is the charge state and q = 74 and 76) of different fluences with highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples. Ion induced defect (D) peak was observed for all irradiated samples. Splitting of D peak into two-sub peaks D1 and D2, and narrowing of the full width half maximum of 2D1 peak (~ 27 cm−1) with a position at ~ 2679 cm−1 of the 2D band (overtone of D peak) were observed simultaneously for a particular fluence of Bi74+ ions. These results imply the formation of a monolayer graphene-like structure on the HOPG surface.
