To clarify the role of water and pyrite on the synergistic effect for the coal conversion, hydrogenation of dibenzyl ether using pyrite as a catalyst was carried out with and without water addition. The combined solution was filtered with a membrane filter, and then the solution was evaporated to weigh the residue. Gas chromatography analysis was performed. Overall, results indicate that the synergistic effect between pyrite and water on coal hydrogenation should be derived from the suppression of the retrogressive reactions occurring in the coal hydrogenation, in which pyrite acted as the catalyst.
