Polythioamide could adsorb mercury(II) ion quantitatively from aqueous solution at pH 1-11. The recovery of mercury (II) ion reached almost 100% within 30 min. Mercury (II) ion was selectively adsorbed from the solution also containing large amounts of the other metal ions, such as iron(III), copper(II), zinc(II), manganese(II), lead(II), and cadmium(II) ions, at pH about 1. The adsorbed mercury(II) could be desorbed in alkaline solution as mercury vapor by adding tin(II) chloride as a reducing agent. The polythioamide after the desorption was reusable for adsorption of mercury(II) ion.
