Passive millimeter-wave microscopy of aqueous protein solutions at low temperatures

Thermal radiation emitted from aqueous solutions of bovine serum albumin (BSA), which is a serum albumin protein derived from cows, was measured and analyzed by passive millimeter-wave microscopy at temperatures below the freezing point of water. The thermal radiation emitted from 0.9 ml BSA aqueous solutions with different concentrations was measured at 50 GHz and temperatures ranging from 130 K to 260 K. Two different conformational states of the BSA were observed. The emissivities of the BSA solutions were successfully determined from the measured results. Imaging of small $1.0 \mu \mathrm{l}$ volumes of allayed BSA aqueous solutions was carried out at 230 K.
