Magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect in RENiBC (RE = Tb, Dy, and Ho) compounds

The magnetism and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in RENiBC (RE = Tb, Dy, and Ho) compounds have been investigated by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. A second order magnetic transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic state is observed for TbNiBC and DyNiBC, whereas HoNiBC orders antiferromagnetically under low magnetic field, and a field-induced first order metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state below TN occurs under higher magnetic field. A giant reversible MCE is observed in RENiBC compounds around their respective ordering temperatures. For a magnetic field change of 0-5 T, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change (-ΔSmax M) are 20.8, 17.4, and 21.5 J/kg K, and the values of the relative cooling power (RCP) are 499, 465, and 424 J/kg for RE = Tb, Dy, and Ho, respectively. The corresponding values of ΔT max ad are 11.0, 8.0, and 10.9 K. The large values of -ΔSmax M, ΔT max ad and RCP indicate that the RENiBC compounds are attractive for active magnetic-refrigeration.
