A thixomolded magnesium (Mg) alloy AZ91D was fiiction-stir-welded. Relationships between mechanical properties and microstracture were examined in the weld. The base material consisted of eutectic structure with some primary phases, whereas the stir zone showed an equaixed homogeneous solid solution. Hardness in the stir zone increased with decreasing thermal effects during friction stir welding. Tensile properties of the transverse specimen consisting of both the weld and base material did not differ from those of the base material. The fracture of the weld occurred in the unaffected base material region. The longitudinal tensile specimen including only the stir zone showed over 10 % larger ultimate tensile strength and elongation than the transverse tensile specimen. The present study showed that friction stir welding (FSW) could improve mechanical properties of thixomolded Mg alloy AZ91D by homogenization of the as-cast microstrucrure.
