The equilibrium β-Mg2Si phase in an Al-1.0mass%Mg2Si alloy was observed by 400 kV high-resolution energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM). The EFTEM yielded enough electron energy loss spectroscopy intensity to take lattice images of the β-phase. Core-loss images of Mg and Si lattice fringes were observed and showed a spacing of 0.32 nm. Thus, the existence of two sublattices of Mg and Si in the phase was directly verified.
