We examined the effects of both volatile and intravenous general anesthetics (GAs) on excitatory synaptic transmission with and without recurrent inhibition in CA1 neurons in rat hippocampal slice. Volatile anesthetics (VAs) act mainly on excitatory pathways, whereas intravenous anesthetics (IAs) alter mainly recurrent inhibitory pathways.
