In 2017, heavy rains upstream of Sabo dams in northern Kyushu, Japan, caused several downstream disasters attributable to debris-wood flow. It is thus necessary to implement protective measures throughout the entire river basin. The potential effects of such measures on concrete-slit Sabo dams installed in regions of lowgradient flow must be examined. We describe how to capture debris-wood in the backwaters of concrete-slit Sabo dam pools. We also propose the installation of wire-nets to prohibit debris-wood spill-out, and provide detailed diagrams illustrating the implementation of such countermeasures.
