Chemical analysis of the cube phase in Al-Mg-Si alloy by EFTEM

Chemistry of the cube-shaped phase in Al-Mg-Si alloy with excess Mg was investigated by energy filtering TEM (EFTEM) in combination with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Pixel intensities in elemental maps were utilized for quantification of the chemical composition. It has been clarified that the cube phase was not Mg 2Si but had a higher Mg/Si ratio. Scanning low energy electron microscopy (SLEEM) was also used for observation of this phase.
