Ce(Pd1-xMx)2Al3 (M=Cu or Ag) is a hexagonal system showing alternation between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) orderings depending on the substitutional amount x. Measurements on single crystals of antiferromagnet CePd2Al3 and ferromagnets Ce(Pd0.8M0.2)2Al3 show the former is strongly anisotropic with magnetic moments aligning in basal planes as has been reported, while reversed and weakened magnetic anisotropy is observed in the latter ferromagnets, with c-axis being easy direction of magnetization. A great change in crystal-electric field (CEF), including distortion, is implied by our results.
