N2 - An effective novel method for synthesis of 5, 7-dimethoxy-1-indanone using diethyl 2-(3, 5-dimethoxybenzyl) malonate, which is readily prepared, as starting material was successfully developed. A mixture of starting material in methanesulfonic acid at 100°C was stirred for 2 h the product can be afforded in 95% yield. Because of only needing cheaper starting material, easier workup and normal equipments, this reaction could be applied to industrial production. Furthermore, the possible mechanism of the reaction was proposed.
