Aging behavior and microstructure observation of MgB2/Al- 1mass%Mg2Si composite materials

In the previous work, aging behavior of SiC particle dispersed Al-1mass%Mg2Si alloy composite material was investigated by micro Vickers hardness measurement and transmission electron microscopy. In the a SiC particle dispersed composite materials, preferential precipitates on dislocations, which had been introduced during quenching after solid solution treatment, are observed. The age-hardening ability of the composite materials slightly decreased compared with that of the matrix alloy. In this work, aging behavior of the MgB2 particle dispersed Al-1mass%Mg2Si alloy composite material including 4, 8 and 50 vol. % MgB2, was investigate by hardness test and TEM observation. The age-hardening ability was observed for the composite materials with 4 and 8 vol. % MgB2 but not for that with 50 vol. % MgB2. The precipitates in these composite materials were also investigated using TEM observation. The precipitates were observed in the extruded 50 vol. % MgB2/Al-1%Mg2Si composite material.
