A total of 1026 cases of toxemia of pregnancy were chosen from some 1500 cases collected in cooperation with many hospitals and medical facilities in Japan, and examined for the purpose of devising an appropriate scoring system for toxemia of pregnancy. We prepared various scoring methods relating to toxemia of pregnancy and compared them to determine their value in predicting intrauterine growth retardation, fetal death, and maternal persistent hypertension at 30 days after delivery. A scoring method taking edema, proteinuria, and hypertension (EPH) was found to be better and easier to use than other methods.
