Between January 1987 and December 2006,107 patients with bladder cancer underwent total cystectomy at our department. Clinicopathological findings and clinical outcome were analyzed. The patients consisted of 92 males and 15 females, with a mean age of 65.0 years. The follow up period ranged from 1 to 233 months, with a mean period of 46.6 months. The 1-, 3- and 5-year cause-specific survival rates for all patients were 89.4%, 70.4% and 68.5%, respectively. The 1-, 3- and 5-year recurrence-free survival rates were 89.8%, 62.8% and 59.3%, respectively. Preoperative presence of hydronephrosis, tumor stage, tumor grade, lymph node metastasis, lymphatic invasion, venous invasion, infiltration pattern and histological type demonstrated significant effects on cancer-specific survival. Multivariate analysis with the Cox's regression analysis showed the most influential factor to be the infiltration pattern.
