Abstract

The structure of water in the vicinity of amphoteric polymers composed of cationic and anionic monomer units was analyzed in their aqueous solutions and thin films by using vibrational spectroscopies. The amphoteric polymers did not affect the structure of water significantly, irrespective of its solubility in water. Moreover, the number of platelets adhered to the films was smaller than that into PBMA film. These results suggest that the water structure is very important factor to generate blood-compatibility of polymers.
