Abstract
A simple theoretical model, which well describes the collision problem in a Paul ion trap in the presences of laser cooling and rf-heating, is established and confirmed by the experiments. As an application, the preferable conditions of the mass ratio and the density ratio in the sympathetic cooling for arbitrary pairs of ions are predicted.
