Abstract

In compound open channel flows, it is important to clarify the horizontal vortices due to the shear instability at the junction between the main channel and the flood plain. The numerical method based on the two-layered flow model is developed to simulate the 2-D and 3-D flow structure caused by horizontal vortices in compound open channel flows with a rectangular main channel. Numerical simulation is done under the hydraulic conditions of the laboratory tests by Ikeda et al (1995). The model performance is examined through the comparison between the numerical results and the experimental ones.
