Abstract

Summary of case report: Mitochondrial myopathy is a rare mitochondrial disorder with a wide range of multi-systemic symptoms, which mainly affects on systemic skeletal muscles and central nervous system. We present a case of 57-year-old woman who was brought to our hospital due to femoral neck fracture. Postoperatively, systemic myopathy was suspected by the general findings. The diagnosis was confirmed to mitochondrial myopathy by the presence of large-sized abnormal mitochondria under the electronmicroscope findings of the biopsied muscle. However, the general condition of the patient was gradually worsened, and died of pneumonia at the postoperative 41days. Conclusion: There are no report about bone quality and disorder in mitochondrial myopathy so far. In this paper, we have supposed a possibility of the relationship between the bone weakness and the mitochondrial myopathy.
