Hexagonal tabular β-phase in Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy

Abstract

The hexagonal tabular β-phase in Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy was discussed. This phase has the same crystal lattice as β-Mg2Si, but a different habit plane and contains less than 2.0 at % Cu. A precipitate with hexagonal plate form in an Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy was also discovered. The results showed that the equilibrium phase in over-aged Al-Mg_si alloy was the β-MgSi phase, which was plate-like and exhibited an unique orientation relationship (OR) to the matrix.
