Abstract

The proton gradient is catalytically converted to electricity by ruthenium aqua complex [Ru(trpy)(3, 5-di-tert-butylquinone) (H2O)]2+ (trpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine). The first successful energy conversion from proton gradient to electricity is based on the redox reactions of this ruthenium complex coupled with acid-base reaction.
