Abstract

The physical mechanism of the generation of radiation from Cherenkov wakes in a magnetized plasma was verified. Radiation frequencies up to 200 GHz were detected and tuned by varying the gas pressure. The relative power of the signal was measured to scale with the square of the dc magnetic field strength. The results support the potentiality of developing high-power, tunable, and short-pulse coherent radiation sources with a frequency ranging from microwaves to THz.
