Abstract

The structure of water in the vicinity of zwitterionic polymers including a copolymer composed of anionic and cationic monomer units was analyzed in their aqueous solutions and thin films by using vibrational spectroscopies. In contrast to ordinary polyelectrolytes, zwitterionic polymers had a very small effect on the structure of water, irrespective of its solubility in water. Zwitterionic polymer films showed a good bio- and blood- compatibility with respect to the V79 cell, complement, platelet systems when compared with other polymer films. These results suggest that the structure of water is very important factor to generate bio- and blood- compatibility of polymers.
