Abstract

[SUMMARY] Purpose : The purpose of this study was to clarify the structure of public health nurses' learning during case discussions for on-the-job training(OJT), and to find a method to enhance public health nurses' learning during case discussions. The learning structure reflects the relationship between learning and the case discussion process that affect it. Methods : This study used a multiple case design. Three case discussions in three workplaces that conducted case discussions for OJT for over a year were utilized. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to capture learning processes for case providers and non-case providers and used participant observations to capture case discussion processes. We qualitatively analyzed the learning and case discussion processes based on the data, and then confirmed the relationship between learning and the discussion process. Results : After the analysis, we obtained four classifications for learning and four phases, and one basis for the process of case discussions. The relationship between learning and the process of case discussions can be illustrated as follows : Exploring the relationship between health status and actual living conditions of patients can help with acquiring attitudes and viewpoints for understanding cases.
